Photos of Where I Live & Work

Here we have an Em Bubinga flute with inlay by Laughing Crow in the key of Em. This flute is signed and dated by Laughing Crow. It has a full, rich voice and plays all the notes, both the Native American Scale in Em and the diatonic scale of G major very well. Some half-holing is required to reach the high G properly, but that's pretty normal with most NA flutes. Em is a popular key for guitarists and G major is popular with almost every musician. Bubinga is a rosewood that is found on the west coast of Africa. I have inlaid a complimentary strip along the top of the flute as well as a turquoise cab to enhance the natural beauty of this dense, hard wood. The polyurethane finish is rich and deep to bring out the gorgeous grain and keep this flute looking and playing beautifully for a lifetime. The finish also waterproofs the wood in order to minimize swelling and cracking related to the natural condensation that forms, also known as "wetting up". The lower pitches require more length (think of the strings on a piano, longer for low notes and shorter for high notes). My Em flutes are usually around 26" long and the longest hole spread is around 1 1/2" on the south holes and 1 1/16" on the north holes. This flute is not for small or stiff hands. If you need something easier to reach, you might consider an F#m (shorter & higher pitch) or even an Am (shorter & higher, yet). I have found that a 1" bore gives the best tone for an Em flute. For this reason, the flute has more length than is comfortable for some.

You can listen to the "dry" MP3 files here and the "wet" or reverb enhanced MP3 files here. I think I've gotten the voice and tone down well with my Em flutes and if you want a performer with plenty of tone and volume, this flute should fit the ticket. Enjoy the sound bites and the photos. Thank you for checking out Laughing Crow Flutes.
