Photos of Where I Live & Work

Another Rosewood from South America, this Jacoba Em Inlaid flute looks similar to Walnut. The grain is richer, deeper and the wood somewhat denser and heavier than Walnut. This is my first Jacoba flute. I see it at the wood store quite often, so decided to give it a try. It really turns out nicely with the six coats of clear polyurethane bringing out the colors and depth of grain. This particular Em flute has a rich, deep tone that many players are looking for. However, with this wonderful low sound is only possible if the instrument is long enough to resonate at that pitch. So, be advised that this flute is not for small hands. If you wear a size large glove or if your hands are limber and you wear a medium glove, you should be able to comfortably play one of my Em flutes. However, if your hands are stiff, arthritic or small, you might want to consider a shorter instrument such as a Gm or an F#m. Of course, those flutes have a higher pitch, but playing the NA flute is supposed to be fun, not an exercise in pain. All that being said, if you can handle a flute like this, the rich, deeper sounds can be very rewarding. The key of Em is popular with guitarists and the relative major scale of G major (which this instrument will also play) is popular with all sorts of musicians and singers.

A true beauty to the eyes and ears, this instrument will bring a lifetime of Joy and Creativity to it's owner. You may listen to this flute by clicking on this link for the "dry" unprocessed sound, or click here for the "wet" reverb (canyon) sound. I believe it has just the right balance of crispness and roundness to the tone. You can get plenty of volume out of this instrument or play it soft and somber. Either way, it truly is an expressive flute.
